DOTs need to expand their capabilities for new technology adoption in order to take advantage of opportunities for improved efficiency and decision support; ensure that they can effectively collaborate with other organizations and external contributors, maintain compatibility across systems, and respond to expectations from younger employees who are accustomed to using social, mobile and cloud technologies.
Technology adoption is not only important for the business side of the DOT with new data collection methods and advancements in information technology, but it ties into the workforce needs as well. There is a need for improved job classifications for tech-related positions and positions for people who oversee the adoption and use of technology. Decision making skills to determine whether or not to adopt the latest and greatest technology are important.
