  4. NCHRP 08-142 [Active] Virtual Public Involvement: A Manual for Effective, Equitable, and Efficient Practices for Transportation Agencies
    The objectives of this research are (1) to evaluate the recent experience of transportation agencies in using virtual public involvement with a particular focus on equity; and (2) to develop a manual for selecting, creating, and using virtual public involvement tools and techniques for each phase of transportation decision-making process. The manual will be relevant for communication directors; decision- and policy-makers; and public involvement, planning, environmental, and project development staff at state DOTs and other transportation agencies. The manual will describe how to efficiently and effectively use virtual public involvement to expand the reach and impact of public involvement activities through meaningful, on-line engagement.

  5. NCHRP 20-127 Business Case and Communications Strategies for State DOT Resilience Efforts
    The objective of this research was to develop resources for state DOTs and other transportation organizations to help them explain the value of investing in resilience throughout the life cycle of planning, engineering, design, operations, construction, and maintenance activities.

  6. NCHRP 03-128 [Completed] Business Intelligence Techniques for Transportation Agency Decision Making
    The objective of this project is to catalog new techniques to extract actionable information from traditional and new data sources that transportation agencies can employ to enhance their decision-making processes. The project will be based largely on identifying promising business intelligence practices from the private sector and exploring their utility using transportation agency and program management scenarios. These scenarios should cover a broad range of agency management levels and functions, including system operations.

  7. NCHRP 08-127 [Completed] Emerging Issues: Impact of New Disruptive Technologies on the Performance of DOTs
    The objective of this research is to develop a guide for state DOTs and other transportation planning agencies to understand, predict, plan for, and adapt to the potential impacts of emerging disruptive technologies. The research should identify issues, effects, and opportunities at the intersection of disruptive transportation technologies and organizational performance for senior managers at state DOTs and other transportation planning agencies.

  8. NCHRP 23-16 [Active] Implementing and Leveraging Machine Learning at State Departments of Transportation
    With rapid advances in computing, data science, and big data, there has been a corresponding massive expansion of datasets that are acquired, recorded, and stored, and thus available for individuals and organizations to turn into actionable information. The objective of this research is to advance the understanding and use of machine learning tools and techniques at state DOTs and other transportation agencies.

  9. NCHRP 17-100 [Active] Leveraging Artificial Intelligence and Big Data to Enhance Safety Analysis
    The need to improve road safety performance for all road users is clear, particularly for vulnerable road users (such as pedestrians and cyclists), and users of micro-mobility services (such as e-scooters). The optimization of investment by local and state agencies to maximize lives saved and injuries reduced takes on even greater importance when financial resources are constrained. This research will investigate the use of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML) and Big Data (BD) to provide the information needed to power safety analysis tools and other systemic safety tools.

  10. NCHRP 08-152 [Active] Strategies for Improving Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Transportation Planning Profession
    The objective of this research is to identify meaningful and effective strategies for state departments of transportation (DOTs) and other transportation agencies to increase and sustain diversity, equity, and inclusion of their transportation planning staff. The strategies will be specific, focused, and designed to foster an inclusive work culture for agencies where DEI in transportation planning is a priority.

  12. TCRP F-29 [Active] Mental Health, Wellness, and Resilience for Transit System Workers
    The objective of this project is to develop a comprehensive guidebook and interactive products that would assist transit agencies and other stakeholders in exploring or implementing approaches to identify and mitigate the factors that cause negative impacts on mental health, wellness, and resilience for transit system workers. The research will address the contributing factors to a transit employee’s mental health.
